Exercise, in general, can be broken down into two workout categories: Aerobic and Anaerobic. The way your muscles react and how the energy is created during exercise is how the two types of workouts are differentiated.
Anaerobic workouts typically involve weight lifting or strength training with short targeted bursts of energy, while aerobic workouts involve exercises that spread out the energy you use over a longer period of time, like running and swimming long distances.
Anaerobics are typically used to gain muscle mass while aerobics are used to lose weight and re-gain your health. There are many advantages to doing aerobics over anaerobic workouts which is why this form of exercise is popular among health conscious people. Done at moderate levels of intensity for longer periods of time, you can use aerobic workouts to target any part of your body you wish to slim down. Doing these exercises on a daily basis will not only allow you to shed unwanted weight but you will also look, feel and be more healthy.
During intense aerobic workouts, your body breaks down glycogen or the sugar in your body to use for energy. Once you have used all of the available glycogen, your body will then turn to excess fat stored in your body and break that down for needed energy. This is ultimately how you lose weight.
But oxygen also plays a big role in the process of losing weight as well. The literal meaning of aerobics is “with oxygen”. Using the moderate levels of energy over a longer period of time, by running or swimming as discussed earlier, will actually trigger the use of fat in energy production. The health benefits of aerobic exercises are fantastic too, which is why most doctors recommend them to their patients. Even people who are able to maintain a normal healthy weight benefit from these types of workouts. Most well-built body builders would not even be able to run or swim for long periods of time.
Some of the benefits include strengthening the respiratory muscles, enlarging the heart enabling it to pump more efficiently and increasing blood flow in the body. These benefits will provide your body with more oxygen thus increase your endurance.
